SACRED WORK- part 1. Psychics & Healers Have Bills Too!

At least once a year someone brings up the subject of whether or not it's ethically moral for spiritual teachers, psychics, and energetic healers to charge for their work; most often with the opinion that such things should be free! They toss around words like spiritual gatekeeping, and backhandedly comment on how such services should be provided to those who need it most, without a cost. In an ideal world this would be true, with said practitioner be supported by some magical system in which the spiritually adept have no bills or dreams of their own to pursue! But that is not the world we live in; for just like everyone else, those who work in the psychic/spiritual world still need to buy groceries, and clothing, put a roof over their families head, and have some comfort in life!
The belief that spiritual services should be given freely comes from various, ancient religious beliefs; including Christianity, and some Pagan Religions in which the talent of the healer or seer is seen as a gift from god and therefore should be shared freely. In such cases, the services were likely not actually free, but paid for by donations to the church or temple, with the priestess/healer/seer's livelihood being provided for by the religous organization. That being said...We no longer live in a time in which our spiritual teachers, healers, and seers have their needs taken care of by the religions and communities they serve.
Another piece to this puzzling belief is seated in protecting the public from charlatans and frauds; something that does unfortunately still exist today. While we still need to concern ourselves with the quality and reputation of the healer/psychic we choose, such can be said for the carpenters & plumbers we choose. No one would expect a carpenter or plumber to come do work for free. Just as there are good carpenters & plumbers and bad carpetners & plumbers, there are good healers & readers, and bad healers & readers, and just as the bad carpenters & plumbers get weeded out by word of mouth, so too do the fraudulent healers and psychics!
Can you think of a single other profession in which people would expect the provider to work for free?
Psychics, Healers, and Spiritual Teachers who do it professionally, are like most other self-employed people...they wear a lot of hats, with many hours of unpaid work hidden behind the scheduled hours they spend with clients.
When I was younger I made the decision that in order for me to help the most people my psychic work needed to become my full time job, which meant it became my solitary income! This decision not only required me to develop my psychic skills, but to become a business woman with an understanding of marketing, book keeping, scheduling, and all the other bits that go into running a business. Over time as my business grew, I hired an assistant; who expects to be paid for her work!
If you feel that the psychic reader, healer or spiritual teacher you are working with does not deserve to be paid than you likely are working with the wrong person. Not all healers or psychics are the same, they have different skill levels, styles and systems they work with. Shop around, find people you enjoy working with, and value the work they do...they are working hard at their job, often with many unpaid hours going into marketing, and other bits. For every hour you pay for their services their is likely at least 10 minutes to an hour that they are not being paid for, not to mention the studying, planning, and management that goes into teaching classes and leading retreats.
For all of you who value and appreciate your healers, psychics, and spiritual teachers I thank you!
