While mediums may recieve messages in a variety of forms and develop different methods for doing so, all mediums enter a state of trance to receive them.  Just as there are different psychic techniques for processing communication between the two sides of the veil there are also different states of trance in which we can access our intuitive minds and process incoming messages.
